New Year's Eve 2026 in Barcelona: where to celebrate

Fireworks at the Olympic Ring, twelve grapes at midnight, parties, dinners and the morning after: how to spend New Year's Eve, 31 December 2026, in Barcelona.

In Barcelona, New Year’s Eve is celebrated outdoors, in style, and with a handful of grapes. On the night of Thursday 31 December 2026, tens of thousands of people gather for the official midnight show, then the city parties until morning. The big news this year: the show is moving.

The official show moves to the Olympic Ring

In recent years, the city welcomed the new year on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, between Plaça d’Espanya and the Magic Fountain: over 100,000 people for a show of fireworks, drones and music. But the major redevelopment of the Montjuïc trade-fair grounds puts the avenue out of action: for New Year’s Eve 2026, the midnight celebration moves to the Anella Olímpica (Olympic Ring), the 1992 Games site at the top of the hill.

The detailed programme (times, format, access) is published by the city in December — we’ll update it on our Events page. What doesn’t change: the show is free and starts a few minutes before midnight, ending after the twelfth stroke.

Getting there: the Olympic Ring sits high on Montjuïc. Allow plenty of time, wear comfortable shoes, and use the access routes the city announces on the day. Glass bottles are usually banned from the venue.

The twelve grapes, a tradition you won’t forget

On the twelve strokes of midnight, you eat one grape per stroke: twelve grapes, twelve months of luck. It sounds easy; it isn’t — the strokes come every three seconds. Supermarkets sell little tubs of twelve peeled, seedless grapes: the smart buy on the afternoon of the 31st.

Other New Year’s Eve rituals:

  • Red underwear, worn for luck (ideally received as a gift).
  • A glass of cava to toast right after the last grape. Some people drop a piece of gold jewellery in it and drink to the last drop.
  • No grapes to hand? Spanish and Catalan TV broadcast the midnight chimes live, and every bar shows them.

Where to spend the night

New Year’s Eve dinner

Most restaurants offer a set menu on the 31st, often with party favours and grapes included. Prices rise noticeably that night and good tables go from late November. Our tried-and-tested picks are on the Where to eat page.

Parties

After midnight, Barcelona stays out until dawn. Three options:

  • Clubs — special ticketed parties; buy early, as prices climb as the 31st approaches.
  • Neighbourhood bars — Gràcia, the Born, Poblenou or Sant Antoni, a more relaxed vibe, often no booking needed.
  • Free guest-list parties — some clubs keep free entry until a certain time. We list them week by week on our Free parties page, and our favourite bars are on Nightlife.

The quiet version

Not a fan of crowds? The Bunkers del Carmel or Barceloneta beach give you a distant view of the city’s fireworks… with your own grapes.

1 January

Friday 1 January 2027 is a public holiday: most shops are closed and the city wakes up late. A few ideas:

  • The first swim of the year — a tradition among Barcelona’s sea swimmers: a group plunge into the cold sea at midday on 1 January, at Barceloneta. You can just go and watch.
  • A late brunch — plenty of cafés open that day, but book.
  • A seafront walk, from Port Olímpic to Barceloneta, to clear your head.

Practical tips

  • Book dinner for the 31st in November, and club tickets by mid-December at the latest.
  • The metro traditionally runs all night from the 31st to the 1st: by far the easiest way home. Taxis are impossible to find after midnight.
  • Watch out for pickpockets in the crowd at the show: bag in front, phone in an inside pocket.
  • Do your shopping on the 31st before 8 pm, and remember almost everything is closed on 1 January.

And after that?

The festivities don’t stop there: on 5 January, the Three Kings land at Port Vell before parading through the city — the biggest moment of the year for children. See also our guide to Christmas in Barcelona and all the dates on the Events page.
