First trip to Barcelona? Here are the essential tips to avoid the classic pitfalls and make the most of it.

Book the big sights in advance

The Sagrada Família and Park Güell often sell out. Book your skip-the-line tickets several days, even weeks, ahead.

Watch out for pickpockets

Barcelona is safe, but petty theft happens, especially on Las Ramblas, in the metro and crowded spots. Keep your bag closed in front of you and your phone away.

Get the right transport ticket

Choose the 10-trip ticket (T-Casual) over 24/48h passes unless you make lots of trips. (See our transport article.)

Adopt Spanish timings

Lunch is around 2 pm and dinner rarely before 9 pm. Bars get lively late: shift your rhythm.

Don’t stay only on Las Ramblas

The real highlights are in the neighbourhoods: Gràcia, El Born, Poblenou… (See our neighbourhood guide.)

Walk

The centre is compact and beautiful on foot. Save the metro for longer distances.

In short: book tickets ahead, watch your belongings, and let the neighbourhoods guide you.
