Barcelona is a compact, well-connected city. Here’s how to get around easily and at the best price, from the airport to the alleys of the old town.
From the airport
El Prat airport is about 15 km from the centre. Three main options:
- Aerobus — the direct shuttle to Plaça de Catalunya in ~35 min, with very frequent departures. Around €7 one-way (indicative price). It’s the best option if you travel alone or as a pair.
- Taxi — door to door, faster and no juggling your luggage. Around €30–40 depending on traffic and terminal. From 3 people, it’s the best value for money and time.
- Metro (L9 Sud) — the cheapest option, but with connections and more time. A specific airport ticket is required.
Tip: with 3–4 people and suitcases, a taxi often costs barely more than the Aerobus per person, while being far more comfortable.
Getting around the city
- Taxi — plentiful, reliable and cheap compared to other major European cities. Handy in the evening or with luggage.
- Metro — fast and efficient. Go for the 10-trip ticket (T-Casual) rather than the 24h / 48h tourist passes (Hola Barcelona) unless you plan a lot of trips: it’s usually much cheaper.
- Shared bikes — available through apps like Bolt, Uber and others. Ideal for the seafront and flat routes.
- Electric scooters — self-service with Yego, Acciona, Cooltra, etc. Great for zipping between neighbourhoods (licence may be required depending on the model).
…and above all, on foot
For short distances, walking is best. Each neighbourhood has its own architecture and atmosphere — from the Gothic maze to the modernist avenues of the Eixample — and with Barcelona’s great weather, strolling is often the most enjoyable option… and it’s free.
